fall into the... gap
when i think about going out into the real world and working, i feel like i'm lacking in a lot of skills. the only skills i'm confident in are soft skills - getting to know ppl, building relationships, caring for them. but when it comes to actually using my nutrition/management/program planning & evaluation/analytical skills, i'm so not confident. maybe it just takes practise and experience.
anyhow, i met up with clement today after class cuz he was in town for a business meeting. haven't seen him in ages and ages. he's back from uganda and is now in the middle of starting up his own business. he aims big!! :) always big dreams... good stuff. we talked a lot about economics and stuff that i know nothing about. :P he is so hardcore capitalism!!
i've started researching HIV/AIDS in muslim countries right now for my intl health paper - how their religion and beliefs affect the treatment/prevention/spread of the disease. very interesting. i'm sure i will be sharing lots of that with u as i read more and more. :)

i feel like pretty soon i'll be relegated to the singles table. lol.
i burned my arm a little while ago and now it's starting to peel..... ewwww.....
had a good time at gabe's tonight! his mom cooked SO MUCH FOOOOD!! and it was all sooooo yummy!! cedar plank salmon, big huge scallops and lamb!!!!!!!!!!! just to name a few. :) good conversation too - talked to ray for quite awhile about what he's doing at work now - managing the knowledge and info dept for the national ernst & young firm which i found fascinating. he has a way of captivating one's attention and inspiring me! :P i talked to sandra too!! don't get to do that very often. she told me to get books on tape for my long drives to 'sauga next term. :) the one person i didn't get to talk to that i really wanted to was amy - we'll have to get together after dec 16th, chicky. well... dec 19th for u, right?
i love all these parties. makes me feel like i gotta get out of my shell more often and see ppl. :) i went to my friend sarah's sangria party last wkd and that was so much fun!!! i think the sangria was super diluted cuz i didn't feel a thing and i had super lots more than i usually ever drink! :P but sangria is sooo yumm. how could it not be with SO MUCH fruit in it?? i so wanna house party now!! but that's probably not gonna happen cuz i'm moving home soon.... haha. i ended up talking to james for awhile about drinking... didn't know he was such a drinker!!! ;)
hmm... i've got some exciting news to share!! though maybe i'll wait til something more conclusive comes from it.... :) all i can say is that if something comes out of this, God is so amazing and once again shows that he has better plans for me than i could ever expect or dream up!

X'mas Wish List (Part I)
Dear Santa,
I want this.
Sincerely,
Brian
(age 25)
How The West Was Won
I was reading the current issue of Billy Graham's decision magazine and in it Billy talks about how great the Pilgrims were and how Godly they were. He writes, "In March of 1621 Chief Samoset visited the Pilgrims' village and signed a peace treaty that lasted for many years. It was a treaty with high social and ethical content, showing deep concern for the social, political and spiritual needs of neighbours." Of course, "lasted for many years" are the operative words here. I think Jon Stewart said it best, "I celebrated Thanksgiving in an old-fashioned way. I invited everyone in my neighborhood to my house, we had an enormous feast, and then I killed them and took their land."
As for me, I love having football on Thursday. Ironically, it's to watch the Cowboys beat the Redskins, year after year.
happy birthday, mom!!
did u know that my mom reads my blog?? O_o i keep forgetting. haha. (and i wonder how many other ppl's blogs she reads. :P) angee's mom reads her blog too. i wonder if she reads mine. hi auntie rebecca!! :)
ar3 is so goood! angee told me to watch during commercials tonight while watching gilmore girls and i kept forgetting to turn back to gg cuz i was so into ar3! haha. zach is soooo sweet!! i think him and flo are really cute together. :) and ian is soo mean to teri. :( i can't wait for our ar3 marathon, rich! heehee.
btw, what's with dawson's?? it hasn't been on for 2 wks in a row!! :( how disappointing. they're still getting it in kitch though, cuz sarah gives me updates. :P what's going on??
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.
~ 2 Timothy 1:7
some words of encouragement for those of u who are going thru lotsa stress and work. i like this verse cuz it speaks of power! we don't need to be afraid and overwhelmed by work and studying cuz God has given us POWER to overcome and LOVE to support each other thru it all (but also to know that God puts us thru these trials for a reason... to grow us and make us stronger! cuz he loves us!) and SELF-DISCIPLINE to work hard!! even when we don't want to. amen!! :)

All I Want To Do
All I wanna do is give this life to You
All I wanna do is give this life to You
All I wanna do is give this life to You
And let Your will be done, ‘til it’s all I wanna do
How does doubt slip in so silently?
Why does condemnation come so naturally?
Why do I still get the best of me?
Loving so little, and living so selfishly
When all I wanna do is give this life to You
All I wanna do is give this life to You
And let Your will be done, ‘til it’s all I wanna do
What have I been given by Your grace?
Will I come to understand this mystery I embrace?
Make of me a new creation now
Fill me with all You are
Be all I am somehow
All I wanna do is give this life to You
All I wanna do is give this life to You
All I wanna do is give this life to You
And let Your will be done, ‘til it’s all I wanna do
Faith so fragile
Reaching for Your hand
~ Ginny Owens
i've been listening to a lot of ginny owens lately. i love her music, esp the piano ones. this song is one of my favourites. so simple, but the words speak my heart. in the last while, i've also been listening to lots of music from the amelie soundtrack, rachel lampa, keith jarrett, vanessa mae, the felicity soundtrack and the new passion cd. my christmas music is on hold for now til the snow comes back! :) or til i finish all these papers and projects.

i appreciate friends who are in relationships but aren't consumed in their relationship and make time for their other friends... lotsa friends. :) and couples who aren't attached at the hip. and that i feel comfortable hanging out with, even if it's just the 3 of us. they rock. :)
i had bubbles and a long chat with brian and jas tonight. it was fun! :) haven't talked to either of them in a long long time. and now i'm chatting with sam about road trips. i'm grateful for old hs friends who make lots of effort to keep in touch. i miss my girls! i'm glad we still make time for each other even though we're 100+ km apart and some are getting married off soon. :)

living in the meantime. i could get used to this. :)
“I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
~John 10:10 (NASB)
[yawn] i'm so tired. back into the mode of working hard... i underestimated what i neede to do from now til dec 16! >.< but relaxing was good while it lasted. :) i bought myself some peppermint oil today so that i will stay awake when i feel sleepy in the afternoons. aromatherapy, work for me, baby! heehee.
short blog cuz i wanna sleep soon. even though there's so much i wanna blog about. being a keener definitely requires a full night of sleep.
so let me explain why missions fellowship was so good. for a long time i've been wishing that things at cpc were more community-like and that there weren't so many ppl that i didn't know and who ran off after service each wk cuz no one talks to them. ever since i joined the missions committee, i've been learning a lot from older adults at church and really loving the time of fellowship with them. i noticed that older and younger ppl rarely mix after service and wondered what could be done about that. at the same time, cath and joanna (sim... i met finally met her this sunday!) had been talking about getting all the univ students together so that we could all get to know each other and for prayer and support since we don't have any sort of univ fellowship. lots more univ students have started going to cpc in the last couple yrs and most of them talk to their own friends after service, but rarely do they talk to other univ students who they don't know already. it was cool talking to cath and finding out that her and joanna had had this talk. we decided to pray about it some more and see how God was leading us now that we knew it wasn't just us who had that burden. i went to missions fellowship on sat night a little disappointed that no other univ students had decided to join us, but i was glad for the time of fellowship with all these older adults i wanted to get to know better. what made it super cool (other than the good time of sharing and hearing about sam and linda going to krygyzstan and prayer for missionaries) was that i got to know rosemary ling and we had a super long chat. it was great to finally talk to a woman!! haha. and hear how she lives her life as a witness in her neighbourhood, using where God's placed her. at the end of our chat, she mentioned that she was on the english service committee (or maybe that her husband was) and that they had for awhile now been talking about making the english congregation more like a community!!! it was so great to hear that other ppl were thinking along the same lines and were in more of a position to do something that has a chance for a greater impact. awesome. God is working at cpc!!! (was there ever any doubt? :P) i'm so excited. :) :) :) let's see what happens in the next little while....
i only wish i didn't have to leave in 5 months. :(

happy belated birthday to hannah banana!!! :)
Saturday, November 16, 2002
i just came back from missions fellowship. wow. all i have to say is that God is sooo good!! just when u least expect it, he gives u more than what u ask for!! no time to explain right now cuz i gotta get back in superwoman mode, but i will let u know what's been going on l8r. :)
the snow is still here!! :D :D :D
but brrr... i forgot what it's like to be driving a car in winter!! *grumble, grumble* ah well. :P
one last piece of news: richard (from cpc) is engaged!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it snowed again today!!!! and this time i think it's here to stay. brrrrrr... it's so cold. i've gotta go outside and brave the cold in the dark of the night... all the way to winston's house for missions fellowship. :) yay, i hope it's good!! i've also started listening to christmas music again. thanx to justin's luther vandross "have urself a merry little christmas". haha. that got me started, and with the snow and everything - it's perfect!! i'm so wishing for christmas to come soon!!

boohoo.... i just lost my blog!! :(
here we go again.
it's amazing what a good night's rest can do. my mom picked me up from the subway last night and i crashed as soon as i got home. i walked in the door and barely said hi to my sis b4 dropping into bed just b4 10:30 pm. i slept all the way til 6:30 this morn. [yawn] what a good sleep.
so last night was my freak out phase. typical of all stressful periods. we had just had a meeting for the new correspondance foodservice course we're about to start shortly - a fascinating course if i didn't already have too much to do. we're gonna try and finish this course in less than 2 months. yikes. after my good sleep and organizing of every moment of this wk according to what i need to accomplish, i am over my stress and overwhelmed-ness... and into high productivity mode. i can totally identify with vivian. i call that the superwoman mode. super efficiency, planning and discipline are the keys to great productivity.
i'm glad i had that nabeyaki with hollyholz today. that comfort food was greatly needed!!
work work work. busy busy busy. neverending. 33 days and counting.... joan and kathy were talking about stress at work on monday at my interview. one wanted to be a walmart greeter and the other, a longo's cashier. lol. these are grown women we're talking about. i just wanna be a garbage girl.. not aiming too high. even my plastic surgeon was taking it easy today. i went in to see him early this morn and he was chatting away to the nurses about his wkd trip to guyana. he usually whips thru everyone cuz he sees up to 80 patients a day. but his conversation was so fascinating, i didn't mind waiting at all. he goes to developing countries every so often to donate his time, skills and equipment to the health care faciliites and ppl there. very cool. he travels quite a bit. my uncle has a job that requires him to travel 55% of the time. imagine what that would be like.
ok, enough about that. here's a blog entry i really liked. my most recent ghost was on fri night when justin and i were at marche. the trigger? "quit playing games with my heart" - bsb. [sigh] summer of 1997.
see what i would be missing if i didn't stalk? great blogging material.

AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2 good things happened to me today.
one was that i will be working at world vision in january!!!!!! my interview went really well and as i thought, it wasn't really an interview, but more a talk to see if what i wanted to do was what they were looking for. it was a good match, joan - my soon-to-be field advisor said. she was saying that since they hire only christians (and there's a broad spectrum of what that really means within the organization), it's difficult to find ppl with the beliefs AND the technical skills. so they're glad i came along. :D hurray.
the second thing i'll keep to myself. but it makes me believe in the good in ppl again. and no matter what happens in the future, i can look to a greater purpose for what has happened in the past. thanx to the little birdie who told me. ;)
God is good. all the time.

hallo!
it's been a few days! i apologize. :) i've been too busy... eating!! haha. after dinner tonight i realized that i haven't eaten at home since fri lunch. been out every single meal since then! aiya. :)
ok, this is gonna be a long blog so i'll try to break it down for u into sections. :)
the apostle
ccf on friday was different. we watched a movie called "the apostle". it was produced, directed and starred robert duvall. came out in 1997. it's the story of an evangelist who kills (i think, or he at least takes him out and puts him into a coma) a man and runs away. very very strange movie. i so did not understand a lot of things and during it, i was thinking to myself - what is the point of this movie?? why did robert duvall make it? i think the msg that the ccf discussion was meant to bring out was that the apostle compartmentalized parts of his life so that evangelizing became routine. and the sin was another part of his life that he kept separate. and the dangers of that. there were so many inconsistencies in this guy's life. he'd go preach about God and turn to scripture in times of trials and have arguments with God in his room late at night... but at the same time he reacted in anger to the youth pastor who was committing adultery with the apostle's wife and clobbered him, and he was also having a sort of affair with this other woman and wanted to break up her family so that he could be with her. soooo strange. but anyhow, there were 2 major things that i really admired about this apostle guy inspite of his inconsistencies. first of all, he was completely saturated in the word of God. it was the first thing he turned to in his time of need and searching, and he always had bible verses running thru his mind. so awesome. someone who is saturated in the word of God draws strength from God's words and promises... and can't help but live a life pleasing to God. (or so one would think :) that's something i really strive for... to grow in my knowledge of the word so that it will naturally be reflected in the living out of my own life. the second thing i admired about the apostle was the fact that he couldn't keep his faith to himself. i'm gonna totally ruin the movie for u :P (not that u would've run out and rented it!), but the last scene is of him and a bunch of other guys also in jail on their work teams. so here they are in the middle of nowhere by the side of a country road hacking at the brush and clearing land. the apostle is shouting out to them "who is always with us? when we do our work, who is beside us? when u walk thru times square, who is with u?" and with each question, the men shout: "jesus! jesus! jesus!" sorta in the style of the black preachers - responsive. so anyhow, i thought that was so hilarious but at the same time, very cool. cuz it showed how the apostle's faith was so infectious and his passion for God so great that he couldn't help but spread it to everyone around him no matter where he was. and thru this he brought glory to God and the name of jesus!
sat brunch
so i met up with max on sat. we had lots of catching up to do. it's been quite awhile since we really sat down and talked. she's a good friend of mine from res in first yr and we used to hang out together all the time, along with a couple other girls - susan and kiran. but they all moved out of trin res after first yr and left me all by my lonesome. :( max is finishing up her residency (an extra yr after grad) in pharmacy at tgh. she lives in the same building as anna and jo! anyhoo, max and i went to brownstone bistro on yonge st. just north of wellesley about a block. it was yummy!! am i hitting all the good restaurants or am i just easy to please?? lol. i think a bit of both. :P i had 2 poached eggs with wild mushrooms and artichokes on a flat crepe. but the crepe was more like a pancake - sweet and fluffy and thick. and it tasted like ma lie goe!! yummmmm. :)_good place, i recommend it!! here's the funny part: max told me about a guy that she's always had at the back of her mind to set me up with ever since she first met me. i was like O_o. lol. sooo did not expect that! it turned out to be her long-time bf's older brother. hmm.... i'm asking around to see if anyone knows him. hahaha. we'll see if the setup actually happens. :) but she speaks very highly of him and from her description, he sounds like a great guy. :)
the fish house
my uncle's here from hk for a couple wks cuz he's got an ifes (intl federation of evangelical students - i think) meeting in toronto. we went out for a family dinner to "the fish house" at don mills and sheppard cuz i've heard good things about it (from rich and jon) so i've always wanted to try it! it was goooood!! quality seafood. :) i had this shrimp and crab stuffed salmon thing that was quite yummy. and my mom and sis had the seafood bouillabaise. mmm!! though they didn't quite like the saffron in it. a matter of chiense vs. western tastes, i guess. dessert was amazing!!!! caramel mocha cheesecake. so light that u wouldn't think it's a cheesecake, with a gooey, dark chocolatey oreo crust! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
cool gifts
i've been doing some surfing on the world vision website in prep for my interview tmr. (hurray!) the more i read about them, the more i LOVE them. i really like their mission: To follow our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ in working with the poor and oppressed, to promote human transformation, seek justice and bear witness to the good news of the Kingdom of God. it's so simple. but complete. their core values are great. i really love how every point stems from a biblical worldview. their reasons for doing what they do all come back to the bible and jesus' ministry. if i end up working for them, it'll be an awesome experience. i really wanna see what it's like to work for a christian organization... what it's like practically. all these mission statements and core values are awesome, but when it comes right down to living it out, how do they do it? i wanna know!! :) i know that they have devotions together every morning (i think. or maybe once a wk?) when i first talked to tree about her experience with world vision, she told me - "u'd love it. they pray a lot." lol. it wasn't her thing cuz she's catholic and not as used to evangelical protestant ways, but does believe in the wvc core values.
so... the cool gifts!! as i was surfing, i found THIS. isn't it cool??? now u can give gifts on behalf of other ppl for christmas, or birthdays, or whatever. and instead of giving something useless that they'll never wear or use or throw into the back of their closet, u can give a gift to someone that has lasting significance!! like a goat for a family, or a piglet, or a chicken and rooster, or stocking a medical clinic (ur gift multiples with corporate partnerships!), seeds and tools for families, vitamin a, preventing the spread of AIDS in a community thru health promotion education, a lifetime supply of clean water for a family, etc. wow!! how awesome is that? feel free to give me that kinda gift! ;) last christmas, alfred and i were talking about giving token gifts to relatives that were pretty useless (the gifts, not the relatives. lol). but at the same time, they probably wouldn't appreciate it if we told them that we had given money to a charity on their behalf. with these gifts, they go to a specific purpose, so u can identify what kind of difference ur gift has made in the lives of others.
ok, i'm exhausted. time to get some rest!! nite. :)

yummmm!
i've been all about trying new places lately... new restaurants, that is! hair of the dog, dhaba's... angee, shannon and i tried this place on mccaul last sunday called "cassis". i've walked by it so many times and wanted to try it, but always forgot about it when it came to picking restaurants. it's a really yummy, nice brunch place! very small, artsy-ish. :) good food! well, good-looking food anyhow. hahaha. i had the seafood quesadilla which was not amazing, but pretty yummy still. :) there was this almond meringue with berry cream filling (according to angee) that i wanted to try... if only i didn't have to rush back for a missions committee meeting! :)
i'm having brunch with max, a first yr res friend, this wkd and i was looking on toronto.com for good brunch places to go to. don't look there if u don't want to drool!!! they have such yummy food pics on their websites. *grumble, grumble*... that's my stomach! haha. so i found this place on yonge and gloucester called brownstone bistro. i've walked past it many times, but never thought to go in b4... this is my chance! it looks like a bright, sunny place too. :) very nice. ohoh! if u want a yummy, cheap breakfast place, go to maggie's on college, west of spadina. ann took me there once and it was goood! very typical of that area. it was summer, so open windows, patio, bright sun.... niiicce. :)
don't worry, i haven't been neglecting my favorite nabeyaki in the midst of all this new restaurant trying. ;) i'm going with hollyholz next wk! i guess with a wk of no assignments due (very rare these days!) comes more eating out... i miss that from last yr! angee has introduced me to a whole new world... lol. i also miss watching the foodnetwork. it's just not the same on a conehead, cut-off tv!!
other food plans include kon-nichi-wa, lobster, steak and tandoori chicken with angee. hehehe. when are we gonna find the time???
i love food!! can u tell? :D
boundless
dating...? the christian way. good stuff.
when u can't save someone u love
happy birthday, arthur!
Happiness Is A Warm Gun In Your Hand
If you haven't seen Bowling For Columbine yet, do yourself a favour and go see it. (Be sure to check tribute.ca for showtimes as it is not in many theatres.) This smug documentary is about gun violence in America and explores the question: why do Americans shoot each other so much? This movie manages to make every single person in it look dumb, even Michael Moore. It rates 'high' on entertainment value as well as Canadian ego inflating. (Contains a few scenes of violent images.)

i've been doing some more body image research and surfing around for stuff on male perceptions of body image. here's an enlightening article i found: mirror image 1 2 3 4 5 6.
"Once, women worried about their figures while men scarfed pizza and beer with abandon. Then came Soloflex ads, male anorexia, and... plastic calves?"
... is it karma? :P
check out adios, barbie!
in other food-related news, i have been cooking for myself more and more. this goes along with the not-going-out-as-often behaviour. cooking is GREAT! so much fun. i still cook a lot more chinese than western. though shannon and erns gave me a really beeyootiful cookbook for my bday and there are SO MANY things i want to make in that book!! i cannot wait til i move back home and can try them all. mom, can i take over the kitchen? haha. :) meanwhile.... angee, can i come cook at ur place? ;) we can have dinner parties again! but wait... [sigh]... work calls. darn it. maybe that can be my one-night-a-wk fun night. c'mon over for dinner, boys and girls!! :)

happy birthday, gabe... i think? :P
welcome to my current life
if i get just ONE MORE assignment, i will scream. right now in our food service mgt course, we have 3 whole projects going on concurrently. how much do they want to drive us to insanity. every time we get together, all we ever do is complain about work... and i feel like i have to do work 24/7. but that is not happening, not in my world. i believe in leading a balanced life, meaning a certain amount of r&r and time away from work. i work better when i haven't been doing work all day. good thing that food service correspondance course from penn state hasn't started yet. i wouldn't mind if it didn't budge til dec 16th. that is my date of freedom. but what are the chances of that. kill me now.
brad and pat have taken to routine male bonding in front of the tv - watching football game after football game. why does it always seem to be on?? yelling at the tv has become a regular part of life here, along with brad's cursing the replays and commentaries. they've become a lot more comfortable with each other, singing loudly in strange voices, exclaiming excitedly when they find a cute chick online. it's quite hilarious. i keep my door closed and retreat into the semi-quietness of my own room... trying hard to concentrate on the mountain of work b4 me. thank goodness for a room that's deeper than it is wide - i can read in bed and almost forget the commotion outside my door. it's a good thing i got used to the tv as background noise last yr. my 3rd roommate is thankfully quiet - no music, no tv, rarely any talking. funny thing, her bf sleeps over almost every night and i hear the 2 of them talking more often than i actually see them in person.
life without a boy is sort of... free-ing. although i must admit it can get a little boring at times. hahaha. ah well. girl friends rock.
welcome to my current life.
sarah said it best:
"take a couple of deep breaths, my friends. we'll be over the mountain soon."
night owl
waaaahh.... i want to sleeeeeeeeep.......
the thing about having such abnormal working hours (ok, not abnormal for students) is that late nights and early mornings never seem THAT late or THAT early anymore. everything just blends into a normal day... legitimate working time. b4 pulling all-nighters on a regular basis, nights always seemed like this long, mysterious time when u recharged. there was the mentality that everything would be better after a good night's rest. but as a veteran of many all-nighters and odd working/waking hours, the night has melded with the day and has become just another period in the 24 h we are given to do work, procrastinate, nap and lament about the amount of work u have to do to ur roommate... if u're lucky enough to have one who stays up at all hours with u. i was last yr... oh how i miss her!!
hear ye, hear ye
i am VERY excited to announce that my beloved shannon has returned!!
go check her out. she had been writing all along... sneaky!!!
ah well.. i'm glad she's decided to share again. :)
i love her writing.
oh, and btw - oliberty is back too.

heeheehee. i'm all alone in angee's condo! she went to ichiriki with steve.
what to do, what to do. i think i'll be good and study!! :)
it's *sparkling* clean in here!! :D :D
i spent the afternoon going thru my nairobi pics. i'm writing an article for the jaffray missions handbook. here are my pics if u wanna take a look. i haven't finished posting all of 'em yet. but i'm running outta space! >.<
happy belated birthday, toby!
happy birthday, deb! :)

wow. can it be? IT'S SNOWING!!!
i was sitting here doing my readings for my 12 pm international health course. and taking the occasional break to stalk (cuz u really can't read about economic analyses of clinical trials for more than half an hour at a time... even if they ARE really interesting.) all of a sudden it gets misty outside and whooosh!! the downpour begins!!! it looks really violent, actually. fast and furious. i can hear it hit my windows. is it hail?? but no... the dome of the gardens is quickly becoming covered in white. this is the real thing!! it brings back memories of last yr when i was sitting in front of my solarium window watching snow float upwards from angee's penthouse condo. this time i'm a couple floors down... and snow's actually falling the way u think it would.
christmas.
is not far away.
wongs, come home for christmas!! pleeeaaaaase.
i'm listening to jacksoul again.
oh glorious melancholy. but not really. it's more of a mix of wistfulnes about the past and hope of things to come.
